Project Summary

Scope of the Project: The Long-Term Solution

Newman School BuildingThe current project provides a fix for the HV problems and upgrades the building’s infrastructure to extend Newman’s life by 50 years. A series of feasibility studies and thoughtful consideration of long-term solutions for Newman resulted in a proposed $27.4 M plan that provides a permanent HVAC solution; includes required code, access and fire suppression upgrades; and tackles some needed and long-planned infrastructure improvements in a cost-effective way. Included in the items are the following:

  • Installation of a new, above ground HVAC system and related code upgrades (Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) access improvements, fire suppression improvements, and roof replacement)
  • Electrical and technology system upgrades
  • Kitchen renovation and guidance/nursing/administration office improvements
  • Auditorium lighting and sound installation
  • Relocation costs

Final decisions on project scope will be made in October.

Partnering with the MSBA

The Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) has carefully vetted and reviewed the Newman Renovation Project plan to ensure that it meets the standards and criteria it sets for investing in extending the life of public school buildings. To this end, the MSBA has engaged its own engineers, architects and project planners to review costs, scope and alternatives, and agrees that the project plan proposed by the town is a sound, fiscally prudent, long-term solution for the building.  Based on this (in a September 30th vote), the MSBA has agreed to reimburse the town up to roughly $8.6 million, or 40% of core renovation related project costs.  See the MSBA press release about the decision here.
